English Proficiency Requirements
English proficiency requirements apply to all international applicants whose home language is not English, and who would study in the United States under an F-1 student visa.
Applicants may demonstrate English proficiency in the following ways:
- Submit a TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo English Test score. In recent years, admitted students have an Internet-based TOEFL score of 95-105 or higher or an IELTS Academic score of 7-8 or higher .
- If you have studied as a full-time student in the United States, the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or the British West Indies within the last two years, OR you have studied at an international school where the English language is the language of instruction within the last two years, you may request that we evaluate your high school records (transcripts) in lieu of submitting an English exam. This evaluation is done case-by-case, and we may request a test result from you if we cannot conclusively determine English proficiency based on your school records. Please contact admissions@wheaton.edu to request your transcript be evaluated for meeting our English proficiency requirements.
- If you are a native speaker of English and are a citizen of the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or the British West Indies, you are not required to submit the TOEFL exam, IELTS or Duolingo English Exam. Contact admissions@wheaton.edu to request that the English proficiency requirement be waived for your application.
