English Proficiency Requirements

English proficiency requirements apply to all international students and to U. S. residents whose native language is not English. Applicants may demonstrate English proficiency in the following ways:

English Proficiency Requirements

International applicants from non-English speaking countries must submit a TOEFL or IELTS score. Generally, admitted students have an Internet-based TOEFL score of 95-105 or higher (587-620 or higher on the paper-based test) or an IELTS Academic score of 7-8 or higher and a CEFR level of C1 or above.

If you fulfill all of the following criteria, you may submit  SAT or ACT scores (see item 2 under "Application Steps") to fulfill the English proficiency requirement instead of TOEFL or IELTS scores. However, the Admissions Office strongly encourages all international applicants whose native language is not English to take the TOEFL exam or IELTS Academic exam. The required criteria for the SAT or ACT exception is as follows:

  • You have studied as a full-time student in the United States, the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or the British West Indies within the last two years, OR you have studied at an international school where the English language is the language of classroom instruction within the last two years.
  • AND you have taken at least one English class with a grade of B or better.
  • AND you have a good academic record at the school attended.

If you are a native speaker of English and are a citizen of the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or the British West Indies you are not required to take the TOEFL exam or IELTS Academic test but instead are required to submit  SAT or ACT scores (see item 2 under "Application Steps").
