Mathematics Competitions

Wheaton College students have the opportunity to participate in local, national and international mathematics competitions.

The ACCA Calculus Competition

This competition is given each spring semester, and is open to any full-time student. ACCA, or the Associated Colleges of the Chicago Area, consists of about 16 schools. The competition is 90 minutes long and done in teams of three. The questions cover mainly material from our Math 231-2 sequence, with perhaps a bit of vector calculus (Math 331).

The Putnam Competition

A national collegiate mathematics competition sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America >>, is given the first Saturday in in December to well over two thousand students in the U.S., including many of the brightest future mathematicians. The exam is given in two parts, from 9a.m.-noon and from 2-5 p.m. Each part consists of six problems graded on a ten point scale. Partial credit is normally not given. Some practice sessions are usually held in the weeks prior to the competition. Please see Dr. Lovett if you are interested.
