Professors To Join Department Of Geology And Environmental Science

March 15, 2018

With the retirements of Dr. James Clark and Dr. Jeff Greenberg, we are welcoming new professors to join the Department of Geology and Environmental Science in the fall of 2018.

Dr. Kathryn Maneiro will assume many of the teaching responsibilities of Dr. Jeff Greenberg including mineral science, petrology, and structural geology. As a geochemist/geochronologist she plans to reintroduce geochemistry to our undergraduate curriculum. Her research involves dating some of the Earth's oldest garnets. She completed her PhD at Boston University, more recently a post-doc at Boston College, and a lectureship at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. She and Dr. Sam Smidt were undergraduate classmates at Olivet Nazarene University.

Dr. Andrew Luhmann ’06 will join the department as assistant professor of geology assuming responsibility for courses in geomorphology, hydrogeology and aqueous geochemistry. He earned a Ph.D. in geology from the University of Minnesota in 2011, completing a dissertation on the hydrogeology of karst aquifers. He continued at UMN in post doc and research associate positions until 2015. He then joined the faculty of the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology as an assistant professor (tenure track) where he developed an undergraduate and graduate curricula, a research program in hydrogeology, and supervised both graduate and undergraduate students in research. He is the author or co-author of fourteen peer reviewed articles and seventy-four abstracts for conference presentations (starting with one presented when he was an undergraduate here with Dr. Jeff Greenberg in 2005). In collaboration with other investigators, he has participated in funded proposals for research grants from NSF, DOE, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) that exceed $1 million and involve significant studies of karst groundwater systems, the geochemistry of carbon sequestration, and natural fluid-rock processes.
